Bone and Bread by Saleema Nawaz
Requirements: .ePUB reader | 737 KB
Overview:
Beena and Sadhana are sisters who share a bond that could only have
been shaped by the most unusual of childhoods — and by shared tragedy.
Orphaned as teenagers, they have grown up under the exasperated watch of
their Sikh uncle, who runs a bagel shop in Montreal's Hasidic community
of Mile End. Together, they try to make sense of the rich, confusing
brew of values, rituals, and beliefs that form their inheritance. Yet as
they grow towards adulthood, their paths begin to diverge. Beena
catches the attention of one of the "bagel boys" and finds herself
pregnant at sixteen, while Sadhana drives herself to perfectionism and
anorexia.
When we first meet the adult Beena, she is grappling
with a fresh grief: Sadhana has died suddenly and strangely, her body
lying undiscovered for a week before anyone realizes what has happened.
Beena is left with a burden of guilt and an unsettled feeling about the
circumstances of her sister's death, which she sets about to uncover.
Her search stirs memories and opens wounds, threatening to undo the
safe, orderly existence she has painstakingly created for herself and
her son.
Saleema Nawaz's characters compel us, intrigue us, and
delight us with their raw, complicated humanity, and her sentences sing
in the gorgeous cadences of a writer who chooses every word with the
utmost care. Heralded across Canada for the power and promise of her
debut collection, Mother Superior, Nawaz proves with Bone and Bread that
she is one of our most talented and unique storytellers.

Garbo Laughs by Elizabeth Hay (.ePUB)
Garbo Laughs by Elizabeth Hay
Requirements: ePub reader 2MB
Overview: Elizabeth Hay’s runaway national bestseller is a funny, sad-eyed, deliciously entertaining novel about a woman caught in a tug of war between real life and the films of the past. Inflamed by the movies she was deprived of as a child, Harriet Browning forms a Friday-night movie club with three companions-of-the-screen: a boy who loves Frank Sinatra, a girl with Bette Davis eyes, and an earthy sidekick named after Dinah Shore. Into this idiosyncratic world, in time with the devastating ice storm of 1998, come two refugees from Hollywood: Harriet’s Aunt Leah, the jaded widow of a screenwriter blacklisted in the 1950s, and her sardonic, often overbearing stepson, Jack. They bring harsh reality and illuminate the pull of family and friendship, the sting of infidelity and revenge, the shock of illness and sudden loss. Poignant, brilliant, and delightfully droll, Garbo Laughs reveals how the dramas of everyday life are sometimes the most astonishing of all.

The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara (.ePUB)(.MOBI)
The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara
Requirements: ePUB/MOBI Reader, 3.12 MB
Overview: Readers of exciting, challenging and visionary literary fiction—including admirers of Norman Rush's Mating, Ann Patchett's State of Wonder, Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible, and Peter Matthiessen's At Play in the Fields of the Lord—will be drawn to this astonishingly gripping and accomplished first novel. A decade in the writing, this is an anthropological adventure story that combines the visceral allure of a thriller with a profound and tragic vision of what happens when cultures collide. It is a book that instantly catapults Hanya Yanagihara into the company of young novelists who really, really matter.
In 1950, a young doctor called Norton Perina signs on with the anthropologist Paul Tallent for an expedition to the remote Micronesian island of Ivu'ivu in search of a rumored lost tribe. They succeed, finding not only that tribe but also a group of forest dwellers they dub "The Dreamers," who turn out to be fantastically long-lived but progressively more senile. Perina suspects the source of their longevity is a hard-to-find turtle; unable to resist the possibility of eternal life, he kills one and smuggles some meat back to the States. He scientifically proves his thesis, earning worldwide fame and the Nobel Prize, but he soon discovers that its miraculous property comes at a terrible price. As things quickly spiral out of his control, his own demons take hold, with devastating personal consequences.
“The People in the Trees is a Nabokovian phantasmagoria, bound to raise serious, interesting, troubling questions. Hanya Yanagihara is a writer to watch."
—Madison Smartt Bell, author of The Color of Night and All Souls’ Rising
“The People in the Trees is not a first novel like other first novels. This is a big, soaring, old-school, super-absorbing vehicle into another world. It’s a mystery story, an ecological parable, a monstrous confession, and a fascinating consideration of moral relativism. Yanagihara’s narrator is misanthropic and grotesque, yet simultaneously magnetic; her prose is dazzling; and her book is a triumph of the imagination.
—Anthony Doerr, author of Four Seasons in Rome and The Shell Collector
“This is an engrossing, beautifully detailed, at times amazing (and shocking) novel, and right up my alley: a far-off and beautiful place in the Pacific, islanders living to their own drumbeat, earnest meddling outsiders, and a sticky outcome—the Fall, with a lot of science and passion behind it, and an impressive debut for Hanya Yanagihara. I loved this book.”
—Paul Theroux, author of The Lower River and The Great Railway Bazaar

Women in the Wall by Julia O'Faolain (.ePUB)
Women in the Wall by Julia O'Faolain
Requirements: ePub 578 KB
Overview: Julia O'Faolian's second novel, first published in 1973, offers a rich, vivid portrait of the political and religious turmoil of sixth-century Gaul, wherein we find Radegunda, wife of King Clotair having been seized by him as a prize of war. Radegunda builds a convent, a refuge for the Brides of Christ, and there becomes renowned for her austerity and mysticism. Her religion, however, is fanatical, and her quest for sainthood will serve to undermine the seeming calm of the retreat she has made. 'Vibrant and strange... [a] journey into a darker, wilder moment of history.' Sarah Dunant, Guardian

Downhill Chance by Donna Morrissey (.ePUB)
Downhill Chance by Donna Morrissey
Requirements: epub reader; 419 kb
Overview: With Kit’s Law, Donna Morrissey established herself as a gifted storyteller. Her chronicle of life in a remote Newfoundland outport was acclaimed by critics and embraced by readers worldwide. Downhill Chance is a captivating successor to Morrissey’s first novel. Set in a pair of isolated fishing communities in Newfoundland during and after the Second World War, this is the story of two families joined by friendship but torn apart by fear and sorrows.
Prude Osmond reads her tea leaves and predicts dark days ahead. Meanwhile, an hour’s boat ride away, Job Gale leaves his wife and two young daughters behind to fight in the war, a cause neither they nor their neighbors understand. The war and the dark secrets it holds cascade over the Gale family, afflicting the sensitive yet resourceful Clair, an unforgettable heroine. Forced to restart her life in another place, she must forsake the family she loves and her community.
Morrissey blends drama, gritty realism, and a flair for the comic in this unique novel. At its core is the unravelling of secrets — and the redemption that truth ultimately brings.
